David Coyne's Guide to Car Week 2021

Updated: Aug 5

Monterey Car Week 2021 is just around the corner and it is time to put together my game plan for the week!

What is my game plan? I am one of those people who enjoys car spotting and usually do not try and go to every single event possible. Usually, my week consists a lot of camping 17-Mile Drive and checking out the hotel parking lots, with a few events thrown into the mix. Also, this year, I am going to do more of a documentary style of coverage,

along with the typical automotive photography.

My game plan for Monterey Car Week 2021:

I will be arriving in Monterey in the late afternoon on Wednesday (8/11), and will be picking up my media credentials for The Quail and then for Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. After the check-in processes have been completed, I will drive along 17-Mile Drive to see if there are any cool cars hanging around. On my way through 17-Mile Drive, I will check out the Spanish Bay Hotel to see what vehicles are parked out front (there is usually a good showing of vehicles). After the Spanish Bay, I will check into my hotel and unload the car. After my wife and I settle into our room for the week, I will go back to 17-Mile Drive and look for cars to photograph. The last thing I will do on Wednesday is go to Carmel-by-the-Sea and do some light painting if any nice cars are out. Usually, Wednesday night is light on cars since most cool cars will be at McCall's Motorworks Revival which I will not be attending this year.

On Thursday morning I will get up on the early side and do a lap or two around 17-Mile Drive to see if any photoshoots are happening and to camp out and try to get some scenic shots of anyone doing some early morning driving. Sometimes, some gems drive through on Thursday morning. Once I camp out for an hour or two, I will check Spanish Bay again to get some early shots before a lot of people show up, then I will make my way through 17-Mile Drive again to the Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance Presented by Rolex starting line to photograph the start and get some portraits.

After the start is complete, I will make my way to the auction viewings. There are some amazing cars going up for auction, so I am going to take the time to visit the viewings. The auctions I will check out are Bonhams, Gooding & Company’s, Mecum, Russo and Steele, and RM Sotheby’s. After the auctions, I will continue to check out the hotels in the Monterey Area and head back to Carmel and 17-Mile Drive for some car spotting and scheduled photoshoots.

And as usual, once the sun sets, I will be heading back to Carmel to do some light paining.

Friday is dedicated the The Quail. This is my favorite event of the week and usually has a powerhouse showing of vehicles. I am covering this event as the official photographer for The Quail, so It will be a very busy day. Usually when I attend this event, I just casually photograph the cars and scenery... but this year, I am on a full assignment and will be documenting the full event and factory reveals. It is going to be an action packed day and cannot wait!

After The Quail, I will probably go out to dinner with my wife and then possibly go to Carmel for some light painting... it just really depends how gassed I am after a full day.

I have edited this post because I have an update! I will be attending Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion for the first half of the day. The main event for me on Saturday is the concept lawn load in and the Ferrari House drive in. Last but not least, light pain in Carmel if the streets are not blocked off due to dumb people like what happened in 2019...

The morning is dedicated to the concept lawn, Ferrari House, and Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. I will do dawn patrol and check out the event until about 10:00am or 11:00am, and then it will be time to start my drive home.

That concludes my game plan for Monterey Car Week! If you want to see a full list of events, check out the list below which I grabbed from whatsupmonterey.com
